Old Style Hopi Carved Sunface, Dragonfly, Owl, Kokopelli Katsina Doll Ornaments by Gene Lalo
Sunface (Tawa) Katsina represents the spirit of the sun. This leader of ceremonies brings warmth, shelter for the old, a bright future, and playfulness for the young and is considered one of the more powerful Katsinam because the Sun is thought to be the brightest and largest of all the stars and essential to life and growth. Dragonfly is a racer Katsina and runs to bring in the warmer weather. The Owl (Mongwu) is the leader of the warrior Katsinam and brings the whippers to the summer dances. He is called upon to discipline the clowns for their non-Hopi behavior. The Owl appears at more than one ceremony, and in different ones at different Mesas. He appears in the Mixed Katsina Dance and in some ordinary dances. At First Mesa, he takes part in the Bean Dance (Powamuya) and in the Water Serpent Ceremony. He is considered a sorcerer. Kokopelli is the hump-backed flute player in the Mixed Dances. He is considered the god of mist, a seducer of women, a baby maker, and a good-luck omen for hunters. Kokopelli is found in all of the Pueblo cultures of the Southwest. It is thought that his hump might just represent a bag of gifts that he uses to seduce the women.
