Donald Sockyma was born in into the Sun Clan in 1983 and resides at Kykotsmovi (Third Mesa). He began carving in 1990 at the age of seven. He was given a piece of cottonwood root and a pocketknife by his father, respected carver Bennett Sockyma. Donald learned by watching his father, uncle, and older cousin carving Katsina dolls. Donald and his father, Bennett usually show up in the shop together. They still carve together and travel together to sell their carvings. Congratulations to Donald, he just took home a Honorable Mention for Contemporary Carvings at the 54th Annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market for 2012!
