Native American Hopi Carved Whipper Katsina Doll by Kevin Crook
The Whipper Katsina (Talaymatsovo) appears in different colors representing the different directions. He is considered an old Kachina although he is usually impersonated by small boys. His main functions are those of a guard during Angk'wa (mainly at Third Mesa) and responsibility for maintaining order during the ceremony. He is a whipper so he also punishes clowns, children, and people when they misbehave. Click on numbered boxes below image for additional views.
