Old Style Hopi Carved Whipper Traditional Horned Katsina Doll by Wayland Namingha
The Whipper (Tungwup) Katsina appears in different colors representing the different directions. He is considered an old Katsina although he is usually impersonated by small boys. His main functions are those of a guard during Angk'wa (mainly at Third Mesa) and responsibility for maintaining order during the ceremony. He is a whipper so he also punishes clowns, children, and people when they misbehave. The Third Mesa version is called the Horned Whipper. The Horned Society is part of Third Mesa.
