Antique Native American Hopi Carved Mountain Sheep Katsina Dancer Doll by Earl Yowytewa
This Mountain Sheep (Pang wu or Kuwan Pang) is a game animal, it is said he has the power to cure the ill and to bring rain. This particular Katsina is a Second Mesa Version and was carved in the mid 20th century (probably around 1970), and has all of the appropriate decoration from that time. The feathers on his ears and on his headdress and red cotton yarn around his disc ears that carry the four directions sign. He has a wool yarn spruce ruff and cotton string painted to resemble a turquoise and coral necklace. His white kilt with red and blue stripes is carved, but the rain sash he wears is of grosgrain ribbon and cotton cording. He wears actual crocheted leggings with nickel bells tied at the knee with black yarn on his left leg and a turtle shell rattle (made from wood) tied to his right knee. His leather moccasins have fringe and rawhide soles. Click on numbered boxes below image for additional views.
