Antique Native American Hopi Carved Morning Singer Dancer Katsina Doll
Morning Katsina (Talavai) represents early morning or dawn because he appears at dawn during the Bean Dance (Powamuya) and announces news. He sings songs to wake the village while passing out bean sprouts for the people to eat. This Morning Singer was carved by an Unknown Hopi Artist in the 1970s. It is a substantial piece standing at a little over 20 inches. The headdress feathers are carved, as is the entire doll. The shawl is fabric and the spruce ruff and the bough in his hand is green wool yarn. The Morning Singer also has yarn at his wrist that carries the wooden bell and at his knees with nickel silver bells tied on. A wonderful example of katsinam carved in the 1960s-1970s.
