Antique Native American Hopi Carved Mountain Lion Guard Katsina Doll
Mountain Lion (Toho) is accompanied by the Warrior Maiden (He'e'e) and other guard Katsinam. The Mountain Lion protects the processions during some ceremonies. In spring ceremonies he appears as a dancer. This particular katsina was carved in the mid 1970s by Peter Shelton Jr. (signed Hoyesva). It is a significant piece, towering 20 inches tall. He is completely carved and then adorned with feathers on his headdress and the end of his staff. He also has yarn tied to his wrist and his knees, as well as red yarn on his sides for his kilt. He has a turtle rattle (made from wood) tied behind his right knee. This is a beautiful piece and it has a wonderfully powerful presence. Click on numbered boxes below image for additional views.
