Antique Native American Hopi Carved Deer Dancer (Sowi-ingwa) Katsina Doll by unknown Hopi carver
The Deer Dancer (Sowi-ingwa) is a social dancer. He helps to ensure that game is plentiful and that sufficient snow comes in the winter to allow a good harvest the following year. This particular katsina was carved in the early 1970s. It is of substantial size (almost 20 inches tall) and an excellent carving. The deer is just shedding his antlers and you can see the velvet still on some pieces (wool). He has red yarn around his disc ears and a green wool (spruce) ruff on his neck. He wears a wonderful small beaded necklace with jac claw. The Deer Dancer is adorned with a yarn chest strap as well as yarn tied to his knee and wrist. Behind his right knee is a turtle shell rattle (carved from wood). His carved moccasins are trimmed with leather fringe. This is a truly wonderful and powerful older piece.
