Old Style Hopi Carved Navajo Imitator Traditional Clown Katsina Doll by Jerel Quamahongnewa

Imitators (Ho-e) appear at the Bean Dance and are noisy, boisterous teases. One minute they will have organized a contest that knocks the other Katsinam about and the next moment they will have a foot race underway that goes right through the middle of a group of Katsinam. The Guards (Hillili) are constantly watching the Ho-e to make sure they keep up with the procession. You know where they are during the ceremonies by the uproarious laughter and the turned heads of the Hopi youngsters. The Ho-e are the last to give up and go into the kiva.
