Native American Hopi Carved Maswik Fetching Katsina Doll by Henry Naha

The Maswik Katsina is also known as the Maasau Fetching Katsina or the Skeleton Fetching Katsina because he announces Maasau, the masked god who formerly owned all the land the Hopis now have and who gave it to them for their use. The ceremony is a reaffirmation of this ancient pact between Maasau and the Hopi. When Maasau appears while the Maswik are dancing he is treated with respect and fear by the Mawik Katsinam as well as the audience. This Katsina is rarely carved.
