Native American Hopi Carved Deer Dancer Katsina Doll by Roy Tawahongva
The Deer Dancer (Sowi-ingwa) is a social dancer. He helps to ensure that game is plentiful and that sufficient snow comes in the winter to allow a good harvest the following year. This Deer Dancer holds his sticks to imitate the front legs of a deer. The pine boughs over his face are to shield his eyes from the audience. Click on numbered boxes below image for additional views.
