Antique Native American Hopi Carved White Bear (Hon) Katsina Doll by Merrill Yowytewa
The Bear Katsina (Hon) is frequently distinguished only by color, such as white, black, blue or yellow. All Bear Katsinam are believed to be very powerful and capable of curing illness. They are also considered great warriors. Bear Katsinam appear most often in the Soyohim or Mixed Dances of springtime. This wonderful White Bear by Merrill Yowytewa was carved in the late 1970s. This is a fabulous representation of the bear katsina with his large fur covered paws and the fur cape. A great older piece. Click on numbered boxes below image for additional views.
