Native American Navajo Carved Rug Yeis from the Night Chant by Duwayne Chee Jr. (Navajo)
Yei bi chai. These carvings are intended as replicas of the Yeis from the Navajo sandpaintings and rugs. These wonderful carvings depict one of the Yeis, the White Face who represents Sand Paintings, with a Corn Stalk on the sash on his back (the tree of life) and the other Yei, the Yellow Face who represents the Rug Weavers, has the Thunderbird on his sash (the sky). The leader of the Yeibichai dancers wear masks of the Yei and appear on the ninth and last night of the Navajo's Nightway healing ceremony. The Hopi stage a Navajo Katsina Dance on First and Third Mesas, led by this Katsina. The corn plant in the center of the mask signifies life and a prayer for a rich harvest. Duwayne Chee Jr. did a wonderful job on these unusual carvings that were inspired by the traditional weavings of the Navajo people. Click on numbered boxes below image for additional views.
