Old Style Hopi Carved Prairie Falcon, Piki Craver, and Blowing Sand Katsina Doll Ornaments by Valjean and Gene Lalo
Prairie Falcon (Kisa) is a runner Katsina. It appears during the Soyohim ceremony with feathers on his arm. Sometimes he carries yucca whips to punish the runners he catches. The crest of his head has a clump of feathers and he sometimes has wings or feathers for ears. Piki Craver (Wah-uh-uh Piki Sona) carries a staff to lean on in order to eat Piki more comfortably. He originates from the village of Shungopavi and his main responsibility is to pester the Ogres that are negotiating to take either the children or the food that is offered. The Piki Craver steals the piki and eats it quickly so the Ogres have to accept what the Piki Craver ate instead of taking the children away. Blowing Sand Katsina represents the sand that gets kicked up in the desert by the wind just before the rains hit. A precursor to the much-needed rain in the desert.
