Old Style Hopi Carved Chili Pepper Racer Traditional Katsina Doll by Terry Gasdia

Chili Pepper (Tsil) is one of the runner or racer Katsinam who challenge men and boys to foot races in which the racer follows in hot pursuit. The winners of the races receive prizes, the losers...well, Tsil forces hot peppers into the losers’ mouths or throws mud at them. Tsil has a yellow face and, as with most runner Katsinam, has large round eyes and wears little clothing to allow for free movement. Click on numbered boxes below image for additional views.
