Native American Jemez Handbuilt and Handpainted Four Directions Plate by Joshua Madalena

This beautiful pottery is the result of years of trial and error by a master artisan whose desire is to revive 300-year-old pottery techniques of the Jemez people. Joshua Madalena began this quest in the late 1990s by searching first for the raw materials and then studying the techniques of his ancestors. The challenge of firing vegetal paint is immense for it requires a delicate balance of air and fuel to fire the pot without erasing the carbon designs. It took Joshua until 2005 to achieve success and now he works on refinement of his craft. He creates these vessels with a nod to history for the shape of the piece, the decoration and the materials used. This pottery revival seems to have been accepted in the community and is appreciated by collectors worldwide. Joshua continues to move toward the future with this beautiful
Jemez Pueblo pottery in hopes of coming ever closer to the wonderful pieces made in the past. This particular piece has a notch representing each of the four directions. This is a beautiful smaller piece of pottery. The stand is included. Click on numbered boxes below image for additional views.
