Old Style Hopi Carved Sad Clown Traditional Katsina Doll by Ryon Polequaptewa
Clowns (Koshares) are not a tribe, but they are an integral part of Pueblo society. During dances, these black-and-white striped characters portray unacceptable behavior and provide entertainment while reinforcing community values. This particular Koshare is sad because he has no food....the larger Koshare has taken it all. Ryon does a beautiful job with these, and his other katsinas, by utilizing his excellent sewing skills and making clothing for these traditional figures.
