Native American Hopi Carved Hornet Katsina Doll

Native American Hopi Carved Hornet Katsina Doll by Thomas Fredericks

The Hornet (Tata-gna-ya) Katsina appears with two very different masks. On First Mesa he has a horizontally striped mask with two soft horns on top of his head of stuffed horizontally striped fabric and he has a sharp bill. On Second and Third Mesas he has a green case mask with Datura flower ears. Stripes of all colors can surround his face. The Hornet appears in groups or singly in the Mixed Katsina Dance and the Pamuya. He is said to be of Zuni origin.
