Old Style Hopi Carved Velvet Shirt Traditional Katsina Doll
Old Style Hopi Carved Velvet Shirt Traditional Katsina Doll by Tyler Scott
Velvet Shirt (Navan'katsina) wears a ribbon shirt which gives him the name Navan (shirt) Katsina. He represents the blooming of plant life and focuses on the beauty of life, as indicated by the flowers worn on his headband. This Katsina is very colorful; his songs are prayers for rain to sustain all life forms. This particular carving is from Second Mesa. This is a fabulous piece with a handsewn shirt and he is carrying sugar cookies as well a piki bread to give as gifts.
