Mata Ortiz Handbuilt and Handcarved Seed Pot

Description

Mata Ortiz Handbuilt and Handcarved Seed Pot by Moroni Quezada

This wonderful seed pot was handbuilt and handcarved by Mata Ortiz resident Moroni Quezada. A spectacular piece with deep geometric carving on a beautiful mirror black background. The glossy black is achieved by rubbing a mixture of kerosene and graphite into the clay and polishing it with a stone until it shines. In the fall the women would take the seeds for next Spring and place them in these pots and then stack them. These pots would be placed in the corner of their home, stacked so the bottom of one pot would seal the top of the other. This storage technique would save space and keep the rodents from ruining next years' seed crop. This pot comes with the stand that holds it at an angle. A spectacular piece of Native American art.
