Mata Ortiz Handbuilt and Handpainted Seed Pot
Description
Native Puebloan Handbuilt and Handpainted Pot by Rocio Silveira
This spectacular seed pot with colorful and pristine painting was created by Mata Ortiz resident Rocio Silveira. The shape of this pot is a seed and would be used for storage. In the fall the women would take the seeds for next Spring and place them in these pots and then stack them. These pots would be placed in the corner of their home, stacked so the bottom of one pot would seal the top of the other. This storage technique would save space and keep the rodents from ruining next years' seed crop. The design is wonderful and the piece is perfectly executed. One side of this pot with the black and red boxes is very Escher-like. A really stunning piece by a remarkable potter. Pottery ring included.
