Native American Acoma Handpainted and Tool Marked Seed Pot with Butterfly

Description

Native American Acoma Handpainted Seed Pot with Butterfly by Beverly Garcia

This seed pot was handpainted by by Acoma potter Beverly Garcia and has tool marks all around the top of the pot. This is a classic example of pottery covered in traditional Acoma designs with a butterfly as the focal point. The butterfly is a symbol of beauty for the Native Americans. In the fall the women would take the seeds for next Spring and place them in these pots and then stack them. These pots would be placed in the corner of their home, stacked so the bottom of one pot would seal the top of the other. This storage technique would save space and keep the rodents from ruining next years' seed crop.
