Native American Cradleboards
At Kachina House, we carry a vast selection of Native American cradleboards for sale, handcrafted by skilled artists from various tribes. These cradleboards are made with natural materials, resulting in unique and meaningful works of art. A Native American cradleboard is often made before the birth of a child, and great care is taken in its creation. It is believed that any mistake made during its construction could impact the child’s health.
Each Native American cradleboard carries deep significance, with the two back supports symbolizing Monster Slayer and Child Born of Water, the twin hero gods of the Navajo. To create the cradleboard, the father drills holes in the back slats, binding them together with buckskin. The footrest is also crafted and bound in the same manner, representing Mother Earth, a reminder of the life we share with her.
The traditional materials used for the Native American cradleboard are juniper for the back supports, oak for the head protector, and leather thongs for securing the child. The head protector is a representation of the rainbow and provides protection for the child. The lacings, originally made of buckskin, are believed to imbue the child with the qualities of agility, wisdom, and speed, similar to a deer. These lacings are also symbolic of power, lightning, and the sun’s energy, surrounding the child with strength and warmth.
