Native American Hopi Carved Hoho Mana Kachina Doll (Katsina Doll)

Description

Native American Hopi Carved Hoho Mana Katsina Doll by Gerry Quotskuyva

Hoho Mana is an "import" from Zuni Pueblo and this maiden accompanies the Hemis Katsina at the Home Dance (Niman). Introduced to the Hopi sometime just before the turn of the 20th century. This older carving by a member of the Pavatea family shows the Hoho Mana carrying her water gourd which she uses with a rasper to call the rains to water the crops. This is a classic style for Gerry. We acquired this carving from a private collection.
