Native American Hopi Handbuilt and Handpainted Pot
Description
Native American Hopi Handbuilt and Handpainted Pot by Rayvin Nampeyo (1961- )
Rayvin is a son of Leah Garcia Nampeyo, a grandson of Fannie Nampeyo, and a great-grandson of Nampeyo of Hano. He is a brother of James Nampeyo. This pot is a classic shape with a wide shoulder and a short neck. It is painted with bee-weed and clay slips. The design has a series of six moths encircling the top of the piece. The word for moth and butterfly is the same in Hopi-Tewa? The moths are each highly detailed and their wings are polished red. Separating each moth is a mesa or wing design. The moth symbolizes transformation, healing and prayer. Below the shoulder the jar is fully painted with rain and cloud patterns. This large and beautiful piece was acquired from a private collection.
