These painted deerskin earrings were created by Cherokee artist Serena Mankiller. The earrings feature a turtle with a peace sign on his back. Turtle represents longevity, tenacity, self-reliance; he assures rainfall; he is the oldest symbol of Mother Earth and carries our prayers to her. Some Native people believe we are living on the back of a turtle.
