Native American Made Compassionate Dancer Kachina Doll (Katsina Doll)

Description

Native American Made Compassionate Dancer Katsina Doll by Sammie Walker (Navajo-Hopi)

Compassionate Katsina (Ongchoma) appears during initiation carrying a hand stone or a painted rabbit stick. He sympathizes with the children who are about to be whipped and touches them with the stone or stick to make them strong so they will not feel the whip. The Katsina also carries a bag of corn meal to bless the children with after they are initiated. This is a wonderful piece that is created in a style that is unusual today. Very few of the artists make the Native American dolls this way. The action is wonderful and the carving, painting and details are very accurate.
