Native American Acoma Carved Maiden Sculpture

Description

Native American Acoma Carved Maiden Sculpture by A. Lowden

This is the first cottonwood carving we have seen from the Acoma pueblo. This unique piece depicts a maiden wrapped in her mantas, the outside one is painted with dragonflies and flowers. The other branch of the carving shows the pueblo and the kivas and it is decorated with a traditional pueblo bird and more flowers on one side and a beautiful prayer feather with corn on the opposite. The sculpture seems to grow out of a mother drum that would be used at the dances. This unusual carving is very involved with symbology of the pueblo people. This piece came from a private collection.
