Native American Hopi Carved Warror Maiden Kachina Doll (Katsina Doll)
$95.00

Description

The Warrior Maiden (He'e'e) represents a warrior spirit. Each Mesa has a story about He'e'e. At one, it is said that a young maiden was dressing for her day (hence, her hair up in a whorl on one side and down straight on the other) when the village was attacked. Grabbing her father's weapons she and the other women fought the attackers until help arrived. The marauders set fire to the village and because of this the Maiden is always shown in black with a black face from the soot from the fire. The Warrior Maiden survived the battle, and saved the village. This Katsina is a potent warrior, and during the Pachavu Ceremony, she leads a band of fearsome warrior Katsinam to protect the procession. Because she is so potent, there are other guards who protect certain ceremonies from her dangerous presence.

Native American Hopi Carved Wolf Kachina Doll (Katsina Doll)

Description

The Wolf (Kweo) is often seen in the Soyohim Dances accompanied by the Deer or Mountain Sheep Katsina. He carries a stick that represents the trees and bushes that he uses to hide in whenever he stalks his prey. The Wolf Katsina's sharp teeth are always visible sometimes along with its lolling tongue. His sharp teeth are visible to boast the wolf's prowess as a hunter. When he appears in the dance with the Deer or Mountain Sheep, they are always wary of him because of their natural relationship as prey for the Wolf. After the dance, it is customary for the Hopi to offer the Kweo Katsina cornmeal, and in return, the Kweo Katsina blesses them on their hunt.
