Native American Hopi Handbuilt and Handpainted Ladle for Niman Dancers by Delaine Tootsie

This small ladle with a tie at the top created by Delaine Tootsie, a Hopi potter that has been making pottery since she was a little girl. Her hand-dug clay and her designs go back hundreds of years in her family history. All of her designs represent water. This piece is worn by either a Longhair Katsina or a Hemis Katsina at Niman Ceremony. It is tied to the backs of the dancers. This ladle represents the collection of rain. After the dance a woman will cut the ladle off the dancer. When she does this, she must bake for the dancer. We are extremely happy to share Dealine's stories as well as her work with our customers.
