The Heoto Mana Kachina is in a category of Kachinas that can either be considered as warriors, or guards. Individually, the Heoto Mana may function as a policewoman. Over the years, many of these original functions have been lost. The Heoto Mana, and the Heoto may have both come from the Zuni tribe. The Heoto Mana appears everywhere with Heoto and dances on all three mesas. This sculpture by John shows the Heoto Mana in her red and white manta and a Mudhead in a long robe with a Sunface with the four directions at the base. This Mudhead (Toson Koyemsi) is the Sweet Cornmeal-Tasting Mudhead who demands the girls grind corn. He returns four days later to sit and taste the cornmeal to see if it was well ground and sweet. This version with the long robe is the Second Mesa version.
