Old Style Hopi Carved Ahote Traditional Kachina Doll (Katsina Doll)

Description

Old Style Hopi Carved Blue Ahote Traditional Katsina Doll by Jordan Saufkie

A'hote is considered a good hunter. He may appear in any of the directional colors, the two most common being the Blue (Sakwahote) or the Yellow (Sikyahote). The A'hote is the Grand Katsina Uncle of the Mixed Katsina Group and appears in the Mixed Dances. The A'hote is painted in several different ways. He can appear with planets on his mask, a "split" mask with different colors on each side, or as shown here with a star on his face. Ahote seems to be derived from a Plains Indian because he wears a long trailing eagle feather headdress. This is a really wonderful example with all the shells and the large headdress. This carving can stand or hang and his trailing headdress is not attached to his body so you can see all the details on this wonderful piece.
