Old Style Hopi Carved Clown Traditional Kachina Doll (Katsina Doll)
Description
Old Style Hopi Carved Clown Traditional Katsina Doll by Jonathan Gaseoma
Clowns (Koshare) are not Katsinam, though they are an integral part of Pueblo society. During dances, these black-and-white-striped characters portray and punish unacceptable behavior and provide entertainment during breaks in the dancing while reinforcing community values. They are sometimes portrayed with watermelon, to show how what gluttons they are. Jonathan is just trying his hand at the traditional Katsinam. We love the feel he has for the older form and the way he uses his pigments.
