Old Style Navajo Carved Hopi Heheya Traditional Messenger Kachina Doll (Katsina Doll)

Description

Old Style Navajo Carved Hopi Heheya Traditional Messenger Katsina Doll by Shawn Deel

The Hehey'a Katsina has no English name or translation. This version is called the Kuwan (Fancy or Colorful) Heheya. He is a Katsina who celebrates the harvest and the corn. He prays for enough food for all and that the harvest will be plentiful. He also celebrates and thanks the Great Spirit for what the people were able to grow and harvest for the year. Shawn is working in his new style with the bow guard sporting his own silverwork and the natural stones for adornments. He even wove the sash using single threads the Heheya is wearing. He carries a dance piece that represents Hopi rainclouds and a rattle with painted sun design. The center portion of the design represents the earth and the black cross represents the four directions. The earth has lines of red, representing water. The rattle is marked by a black design that looks like stitches. The stitches represent the Milky Way Galaxy, or where we are in the universe.
