Native American Hopi Made Figurative Coil Basket with Mudhead, Longhair and Kachina--Vintage
Description
Vintage Native American Hopi Made Figurative Coil Basket with Mudhead, Longhair and Unidentified Kachina
On Second Mesa the Hopi weavers specialize in Hopi coil basketry. Hopi coiled baskets are woven by wrapping bundles of plant material with a single piece of plant material, generally yucca. The colors are usually limited to white, yellow, green, red and black. Designs you often find on these beautiful baskets are Katsina, animals, blanket, and geometric designs. This piece highlights three different Kachinas. Because of sun fade I am unable to identify one of the figures. The other two are the Mudhead and the Longhair. This is a larger piece from a private collection. If anyone can tell me which Kachina is the one I cannot identify, please let me know.
