Native American Jemez Handbuilt Traditional Melon Seed Pot

Description

Native American Jemez Handbuilt Traditional Melon Seed Pot by Marcella Yepa

This wonderful melon bowl was created by Marcella Yepa from Jemez Pueblo, NM. The handcrafted swirls mimic a melon. The tan is the color of the desert, the red represents the sun and the green is for the plants that flourish. The shape of this pot means it is a seed pot. In the fall the women would take the seeds for next Spring and place them in these pots and then stack them. These pots would be placed in the corner of their home, stacked so the bottom of one pot would seal the top of the other. This storage technique would save space and keep the rodents from ruining next years' seed crop
